Because of the series of earthquakes that rattled the region surrounding the Trona Joint Unified School District, the district’s academic year will begin on Sept. 3, a couple weeks later than originally planned, said Trona Superintendent Keith Tomes.

All K-12 students in Trona will report to Trona Elementary School, located at 83600 Trona Road, for the start of classes in 2019-20. Trona High School, which was home to students in grades 7-12 previously, was damaged in the major earthquakes on July 4-5 and is closed at this time. Secondary students will start the school year in their classes at Trona Elementary.

“It’s important that we give our students and families the opportunity to return to normal with the opening of the school year. That being said, we have to make sure that the safety of our staff and students is of the highest priority,” Tomes said. “Working with our school board and within the community, we believe this is the best plan for our students to start the school year.”

Originally, Trona students were scheduled to start school on Aug. 19, but those plans changed when a 6.4 earthquake on July 4 and the following 7.1 earthquake on July 5 shook the Searles Valley region close to Trona.

“We are very proud of the strong community here in Trona, and the response, assistance and support we have received locally and across the state during these challenging times,” Tomes said.
